Known as nanobiotics, Nicholas Kotov and J. Scott VanEpps have created a nanoparticle-based antibiotics focused on fighting medical device infections. They discuss their work in more detail in this video.

The Single Cell Analysis Core, led by co-directors Evan Keller and Sunitha Nagrath, is using blood tests to isolate cancer cells to better understand the disease. In what they hope to become routine practice, “liquid biopsies” are being analyzed to provide an early determination of whether patients may need additional treatment.

Mike Solomon has been appointed as interim dean and interim provost for academic affairs-graduate studies of the UM Rackham Graduate School.

Cindy Chestek and Jim Weiland are members of the research team awarded a $7.75M, 5-year National Science Foundation NeuroNex Technology Hub. The project, called Multimodal Integrated Neural Technologies (MINT) focuses on advancing the understanding of the brain using neural probes with micro LEDs. Along with Kevin Pipe, research performed by Jinsang Kim’s group regarding a process to change plastic’s molecular structure to better dissipate heat was published in the July issue of Science Advances.

The development of a biodegradable scaffold, in partnership between Lonnie Shea’s group and the U-M medical school team, has the potential to lead to new treatments for lung diseases in the future.

Peter Tessier has joined UM from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He was named the Albert M. Mattocks Professor of Pharmaceutial Sciences and a Professor of Chemical Engineering. Welcome Peter!

The article entitled “Peptide-Conjugated Nanoparticles Reduce Positive Co-stimulatory Expression of T Cell Activity to Induce Tolerance” was published in Molecular Therapy.

“Membrane-Tethered Metalloproteinase Expressed by Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells Limited the Progression of Proliferative Atherosclerotic Lesions” appears in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

The article entitled “Robust tactile sensory responses in figure area of primate motor cortex relevant to prosthetic control” appeared in the Journal of Neural Engineering.

Effect of Antimicrobial and Physical Treatments on Growth of Multispecies Staphylococcal Biofilms

Congratulations to Bill Stacey who was recently promoted to associate professor with tenure in the Department of Neurology, Medical School.

Bill Stacey’s group published an article in Scientific Reports titled “Control of in vivo ictogenesis via endogenous synaptic pathways”. The article reports on the development of a model to better understand seizures.

Congratulations to Scott VanEpps who was recently elected as a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

The Biointerfaces Institute’s inaugural symposium on April 19 was a success with over 150 attendees. A microposter session was organized in conjunction with the Symposium by the Biointerfaces Institute Researcher Group, with 55 poster submissions. The winners of the microsposter session were:
